CONSTRAINTS OF EFFECTIVE COMPUTER STUDIES IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NSUKKA EDUCATION ZONE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

It is a normal thing to say nowadays that the world is a global village. This is to the fact that computer have dominant role in the economic and industrial development of the world. According to Hermming (2000). In as much as the world has made a major break-through in storing and analyzing information with the modern machine called computer, it has become instrumental, instructional medium and a universal management device. The everyday life of the people around the globe has been entirely influenced by the computer as it is used in every sphere of human endeavour Agu (2008).

The computer is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and this means that there is urgent need for adequate well – trained computer literate persons to follow is the trend. Okorie (1991) have it that future is approaching towards us to the rate of sixty seconds per minute. This is confirmed at the rate which computer age has made the word a global village. Be it educational, industrial, transportation, communication, medical or even the business world.

According to Harper (2004). The developed countries like the USA have integrated computer use in school that it is difficult to keep track of how many computer machines available now in American schools. In Nigeria the use of computers as an aid to teaching is not only new but non-existent in most schools. The above makes it obvious why the effort is shifted to computer literacy rather than the use of computer as an aid in teaching and learning in schools.

This is because one has to be knowledgeable in the use of computers before such a person can effectively use it as an aid to instruction.

Effective computer studies involves much practicals and needs facilities and other instructional materials. Therefore to achieve effective teaching and learning of computer studies in Junior to be provided. Okorie (2001) have it that instructional materials are the objects that instructional materials are the objectives that can be seen r touched which enable learner  to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes. Instructional materials make lessons more meaningful and promote learning.

Availability of qualified computer teachers goes a long way to determine the effectiveness of computer studies in junior secondary schools. According to Gana (2007) the performance of the students depends to a large extent on the competence of the teachers. Qualified professionally trained teachers have the professional skills to impact the desired knowledge to learners,

Power supply in the third world countries is not steady and Nigeria is not an a computer laboratory will always find it difficult to run a smooth practical time table. This is because there is always not electricity and most schools have not generating sets and those that have will find it difficult to fund the purchases of fuel all the time for the practical classes. Qualified teachers, teachers motivation, power supply and other facilities needed for improved computer studies are in short supplies which inhibit effective computer studies in secondary schools.

Therefore to improve effective computer studies in junior secondary schools, qualified professionally trained teachers have to be employed and motivated, the needed equipment / facilities have to be made available for both teachers and students alike and they school embrace the utilization of the available computer services at their disposal in the areas of retrieving and down loading information from the internet and good textbooks and course manuals also inclusive.

Statement of problem

According to Osuala (2002) the emergence of computer studies in present day educational system is a recent development. This development in education has raised some challenges to computer teachers which are not many in supply. Some of the constraints are lack of fund, lack of professionally trained teachers, motivation of few teachers available and non availability of facilities to embark on the programme, Akinsonya (1987).

The view of these factors, this research work is based on the finding out the constraints of effective computer studies in Junior secondary schools in Nsukka educational Zone.

Purpose of the study

The general purpose of this study is to identify the constraint of effective computer studies in Junior secondary schools in Nsukka education Zone.

The study is specially aimed at identifying:

Availability of qualified computer teachers

Needed facilities for computer studies

Motivation of computer teachers

Power supply for computer laboratories.

Significant of the study

The study will high light the needed qualification for computer studies teaching in secondary schools and enable the government to train and post professional teachers to the various schools.

The study will enable the government and school administrators to provide the needed in secondary for effective computer studies is secondary schools.

The findings of the study will help the government and school administrators plan the appropriate motivation for computer students teachers.

The study will encourage both the government and school administrators to ensure that there is adequate power supply for computer studies practicals.

The study will expose the constraints and strategies for improving effective computer studies in junior secondary schools in Nsukka educational Zone in Enugu state which will help both the government and schools administrators to plan, organize, train and assist teachers for the effective teaching and learning of computer studies.

Research question

Should qualified teachers be employed to teach computer studies in junior secondary schools?

What are the needed facilities for effective computer studies in Junior Secondary schools?

What are needed motivation of computer studies teachers for effective computer studies in Junior Secondary Schools?

Are there enough power supply for effective computer studies in Secondary Schools/

Scope of the study

The researcher covered some secondary scools in Nsukka educational Zone where computer studies are taught. The targeted population was the teachers of the schools used.

Definition of the basic Concepts

Computer: According to Agbasi (2006) computer is an electronic machine under the control of stored program, which automatically accepts process data and supplies the result of that processing.

Computer studies: According to Okorie (2001) computer studies could be seen as a process of education which enable people know how to use a computer to run program and diverse applications including business, industry, commerce etc.

Motivation: According to Umeno (2010). Motivation is an internal state that arouses, directs and maintains behaviour. Longman dictionary of contemporary English defined motivation as eagerness and willingness to do something without needing to be told or forced to do it.
